The Haselhorst Kidz!! (and cousins!)

September 2008

OK...I got tired of all of the crickets congregating on our back porch. It seemed to be attracting spiders who in turn, when it gets cold at night, attempt to get in the house. Well, I sprayed the entire perimeter of the house 2 days ago, crickets came out of every crevice...it was amazing. Well, yesterday, I had the surprise of my life when I found a rather large spider, obviously affected by the spray. Looked up the type of spider it was: A BLACK WIDOW!! (I know you Texas people are probably laughing at me by now because of all of the scorpions and fire ants you all have...ha!) I scooped that thing up in a lockable plastic container yesterday afternoon...it's STILL not completely dead (it's on its way, though). As a result, I've sprayed again every spider web I could find (resulting in the emergence of what looks like a brown recluse! Ewww!!!). I then sprinkled long lasting stuff all over the yard, around the house, in and around the kids' playhouse (don't worry, once it dries, it's safe for the kids and Penny to be around). Overkill? Probably...but there's no more dagum poisonous spiders.

Well, FPU is off and running...Eric said he's got over 50 in the class this time. Quite a bit fewer than last time but it's really hard to get a class like this going with all of the fall activities going. He was pretty satisfied with it, however.

Matthew's football team is now 1-1. Lost pretty badly last Saturday but the team was still OK with how they played...they just got beat by a bigger team. Spirits are still high headed into this Saturday's game.

Allison is loving Kindergarten...but she has more than once headed to her room after school to clean it up (her chore for the day) and then ends up falling asleep on the bed she was supposed to be making. I'm not worrying about it...if she needs the sleep, I'm not going to challenge it. 'Course her bed hasn't been made in over 2 weeks! Ha!

Kara's cough is FINALLY gone. Matthew's, too. We go back to the doctor next week to double check everything. I think Kara will be given a clean bill of health. But, we will probably start long-term treatment for Matthew and his allergies. Fun. Fun.

Other than that, not much else going on here. Found out that Grandma Nancy and Grandpa Dennis are moving to Florida for a new job...that's wonderful! We are excited for them and look forward to visiting them sometime! Congrats!

No cousin news...sounds like Ethan, Hunter, and Kaden are doing well with school. Wow, only a matter of time and ALL of the little ones will be in school! My goodness how time flies.

Pray for Kara...potty training is proving to be her biggest hurdle (changed gross panties during this typing session..ugh). Trying to keep her in panties for the most part but even that isn't triggering her brain to get to the bathroom BEFORE her panties get messed up. She can't stand being dirty or wet, but just can't seem to let someone know before it happens. She's developed quite the funny waddle when she comes to you crying about it. It's hard not to laugh :) ! Allie surprised us 2 nights ago by voluntarily going to bed without her rag...could we be done with the sloppy thing? One can only hope...hee!hee!

Well, have a wonderful rest of your week!

New pics and videos posted tonight...they are scattered throughout the photo albums: Matthew's 4th grade trip to the state fair, Matthew's football game, Allison's Dance Cats practice (and then performance tonight), etc. Even caught Kara looking cute just watching TV the other day.

    Enjoy the vids and pics!

Wow! Autumn has come in with a bang! One day we were suffering through 104 degree heat every day and the next, we can't get above 85....not that I'm complaining. I love this weather! Of course, the cooler weather and flying pollens everywhere have really made for bad reactions in our house. Matthew and Kara are both struggling with their lung issues and what appear to be allergies. A doctor visit last week yielded 5 medicines for Matthew to take home and 2 for Kara. Everyone is improving but we are awaiting a phone call from the doctor today to see if we need to go back this week. Allison had a bad cold but it cleared up within 3 days or so and then she was fine...she's rarely sick.

The garden is going crazy with our green beans and yellow squash. Our tomatoes have seemed to have given up in the cooler weather so I think we are probably done with those. The salsa we made with our tomatoes (and some from Bev and Dan) didn't turn out the way we wanted (we added WAY too much lemon juice). So we are attempting another batch to mix in and turn up the heat a bit. We will see how that turns out.

Eric is working feverishly to get things finalized and get people signed up for Financial Peace University in our diocese (let me know if you're interested). In this time of falling housing markets and rising gas prices, even I (the self-proclaimed budget hater) have realized the importance of telling our money where to go. He's made a few trips to area parishes to do his plug for FPU (and tying it into stewardship). I've been busy as usual with work but also with bunko parties, singing in various groups, and volunteering at the school. It's a very busy time here in Dodge...

Aunt Anna and Uncle Danny escaped Hurricane Ike as it made a turn toward the north and missed Corpus Christi entirely. Anna said they didn't get much more than a shower and it was really, really hot. A pretty normal day for Corpus. There were some storm surge issues there (mostly on Padre Island across the bay according to media sources) but other than that, nothing much. Corpus waits again to see when they will get hit (it's been 30 years since the last hurricane hit there).

Well, gotta run. More things to do and less time to do them in! Have a great week!
