The Haselhorst Kidz!! (and cousins!)

August 2008

Stewardship-Respect Life-Social Injustice Conference went well and got rave reviews! Eric was much more relaxed after it was all over with and I was so proud of him for a job well done!

1st week of school is over and the kids are adjusting well. Allison absolutely adores Kindergarten and is often found by the front door in the morning yelling at her dad that it's time to go! I've never seen her get up so fast in my life (she's not a morning person!)...I'm wondering how long this will last!

Matthew's first football game is this Saturday. I'm hoping he has a more successful team in football than they had for baseball (never won a game). He seems to be improving with each practice and now declares that he's an "athlete" because he exercises now. Oy. Jocks. (lol)

Kara had a rough morning last Monday as we left Allison in the kindergarten room. She wasn't keen on leaving Allie...or, rather, she wasn't keen on leaving the classroom. We aren't sure which. Whichever it was, she was over it by afternoon and is enjoying her stay with Mom during the day. She's taken to carrying a purse EVERYWHERE. She's such the little diva...it's too cute when she tells me to wait before we leave so she can go grab her purse.

Labor Day weekend is turning out to be quiet. We didn't go visit any family and none came to us so we attempted to find some friends to come over for a BBQ or something tomorrow...'course no one else in our circle of friends are hermits like we are so thus, they are not home. So we've been hanging out as a family. Played outside, worked on combine trailers, listened to the K-State/N.Texas game, canned salsa...may try to come up with something for tomorrow. At least to get everyone out of the house for awhile.

Well, time to head for bed. Hope everyone has had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Been a busy August so far!! August 7-14 had Matthew and I riding an Amtrak train from Dodge City to San Diego, CA to visit Uncle Garrett and Aunt Amy (and Ema, too!). It was an extremely long ride, but we got to see parts of the country we'd never seen before. Our visit was wonderful: got to spend a lot of time with them, visit some sites (including Sea World!) and relax at their home. Matthew as already asking when we could go back shortly after leaving!

Matthew and Allison will start school next Monday (the 25th). We had enrollment last week and the kids are going to be busy. Allison is enrolled in Dance Cats (kind of a miniature cheer/dance squad for the school) and Kindergarten. Matthew will be entering 4th grade and is involved in Rec. tackle football (last night was first practice with helmets...God help me). I will be Co-Head room mom for the school: we will be organizing all of the room mothers, doing things for the teachers, etc. I may be helping out the music teacher when needed...got asked that at enrollment. Kara will be staying home with mom; a different thing for her since she's so used to having siblings home. Something tells me it won't be much of an adjustment for her! Ha!

Eric is busy finalizing everything for the annual Stewardship Day to be held at the Cathedral this Saturday. He's gotten me envolved with singing for the prayer service. We don't see much of him this week due to the frenzy, but he's got such a smile on his face most of the time, it's hard to criticize him for being gone a lot. It's nice to see him enjoying his job so much...this is what he was meant for.

Got to see Greg and Amy over the weekend. They had been in far southwest KS visiting Greg's brother and on their way home, they went to Mass with us and had lunch at our house. That was really nice. The kids (OK...and parents, too) hated to part ways, but maybe next time they can stay longer.

A couple of weeks ago, Jason and Katie and their crew came over from Pratt for the weekend and stayed with us. We took in the sights of Dodge (including some Dodge City Days events...like the rodeo, etc.). It was nice to have family stay with us for such an extended time. We had a nice time.

Oh yeah...and that intense heat wave we had? We broke 108 a couple of weeks ago...it's gone. Feels like fall in August around here. We've finally gotten some significant rain, everything has greened up nicely, and we've had the windows open for a solid week (NO AC!!!). Actually baffled me to hear the neighbor's AC turn on yesterday (it was 70 degrees outside!).

Well, better run. Lots of last minute football gear to get today. Allison needs one last vaccination before school starts. And, of course, I waited until the last minute to get shoes for school. Just hoping the paycheck comes in the mail today...my budget is counting on it today! :) Hope the school year for all of you has gotten off to a great start!

Dodge City Days are in full swing and although we had great intentions, we haven't participated as much as we wanted to. We did take in the parade last week on Saturday and the BBQ in the park lunch. We will resume our DDD activities tonight by going to the rodeo and BBQ with Jason and Katie and their family (they are coming for the weekend to stay with us).

Matthew and I leave for San Diego next week to visit Uncle Garrett, Aunt Amy and Ema. Uncle Garrett is still in therapy from the motorcycle accident (has to use a cane to walk and in some circumstances, a wheelchair). They are optimistic about his progress but he still has a ways to go before he's given the OK to return to work. We can't wait to see them as we didn't go out immediately after his accident (there were already a lot of family memebers thre to help out). Our train tickets are bought and paid for and we are looking forward to a long visit. (Thanks to Eric for taking off work to watch the girls!!!)

Other than the intense heat around here, nothing much else is going on. Try to stay cool and out of the heat this weekend...looks like we may get some semblance of relief next Thursday...will it ever get here?? :)
