Had a little excitement around here yesterday. A little after 4:00 pm we had a mild tornado rip across our town of Great Bend. Authorities are catagorizing it as an F1 tornado. It hit the airport, then shortly before city limits, it lifted up about tree top level and cruised over the top of town. They are saying that is what saved GB from a catastrophic situation. The tornado touched back down about 5 miles NE of town and plowed through a couple of farmsteads. The pictures of the thing are pretty impressive. Miraculously, our house and yard sustained no damage, but our neighbors directly across the street and down the street were not so lucky. Most damage was caused by large trees coming down, but there were a few roofs blown off around town. We managed to get to a neighbor''s basement (we don''t have one), and listened to the whole thing going on above our heads. Matthew started praying out loud: "please God don''t kill my family...." As shocking as it was to hear that coming from a 6 year-old''s mouth, we were proud of him for thinking of praying during a time like that! Little Allie mimicked him later in the evening when a mild thunderstom moved through that had lots of thunder that scared her.
We spent all day today helping neighbors dig out from under all of the trees. No one was hurt in our neighborhood that we know of. We may be spending tomorrow afternoon at Chris''s office, helping her bosses clean up there to get ready for patients Monday morning.
Our only damage was that we lost our garden and we had to throw out most of the contents of the refrigerator due to the lack of electricity for almost 24 hours and the high temperatures today. No big loss. We feel very lucky.
God Bless you everyone.
