Just got back from Topeka last night. Great-grandpa Neil Arasmith has been in the hospital for the last 2 weeks for circulation problems and more seriously, pneumonia issues, and was going downhill fast on Friday. So we made the decision to go see him. On Saturday, he had made a miraculous turn around from what we''d been told on Friday! He was on a venilator but by Saturday was breathing on his own. They drew some blood to determine if they could take the venilator off. Although gas levels in his blood were good (they were in the 80''s and according to the nurse and also the doctor later, that''s pretty good), the doctor was not comfortable taking him off the venilator on Saturday...didn''t want to do it too early. A doctor came in after lunch and confirmed the gas levels and stated he was very optimistic at that point and that they''d draw more blood Sunday morning. Mommy (Chris) sat with Grandpa most of the afternoon and early evening so others could take a break. We had a good visit and Grandpa was able to get some needed rest. Well, Sunday morning, they drew more blood and he had good blood gasses again so he was taken off the venilator! It was beautiful to see his face without that big tube in the way. He was in good spirits and was trying his best to communicate with everyone (his voice was not working, but we were told it would take a little bit for that to improve.). He was smiling when we left yesterday afternoon at 4 pm. So here''s to all the wonderful prayers everyone has been sending up!! Grandpa is only 76 years old and we don''t believe he''s ready to say good-bye just yet! Woo!Hoo! Praise be to God!
Grandpa Neil''s spirits were lifted more when Daddy (Eric) smuggled Matthew and Allison in to say hello really quick....kids under 12 were not allowed in the critical care unit. He really lit up when they came in.
We had a good visit and we are hoping the next time we go to Topeka it will be to welcome Grandpa home....Mommy told him he was too onry to get outta the family just yet! Ha! Anyway, thanks for all of the prayers....we will keep everyone updated as we know more.
