It''s a new year and we reflect on 2011 and everything that went on for our family.
Eric and Matthew became certified divers to 150 feet in November. They learned the basics in a swimming pool here in Dodge City and then went diving for real at Blue Hole in New Mexico. All of this is in preparation for a camping trip to the Boy Scout camp Sea Base in Florida...hopefully soon.
Kara is in 1st grade this year and is leaping over her peers in reading. We are very proud of her! She has lost most of her front teeth giving her proud moments of sticking her tongue out at everyone. She is enjoying Dance Cats at school and joined Girl Scouts this year. Kara was in a dance class last year but opted out to concentrate on dancing at school instead. We think she is much happier!
Allison is in 4th grade this year and is also participating in Dance Cats at school. We are excited to have her in social groups again (she joined Girl Scouts). It is tough for her as she was diagnosed this past October with PDD-NOS (Atypical Autism) and ADHD but we are working through things. Most of the tough parts are when adults who don''t understand tell her she needs to "learn how to deal" or "grow up." Unfortunately, we have had some do that to her (why would you say that to ANY child?) but Allie is resilient and we have taught her to focus on other people instead. Her grades are wonderful and she will be taking horseback riding lessons soon.
Matthew is in 8th grade and is at the top of his class. He is a Life Scout (beginning his trek to Eagle Scout) in the Boy Scouts and we couldn''t be prouder! He turned 14 this week and is already begging for his learner''s permit for driving. He''s already looking forward to high school next year (well, this summer really...he will be taking summer PE). He''s still enjoying band (percussion). Last spring, he was involved in track for school, was a member of the regional swim team in the summer, played football this past fall, and played basketball up until he fractured his thumb during a particularly aggressive basketball game shortly before Christmas break. He''s healing, but is out for the rest of the season.
Eric had a long year raising money for a campaign to help our diocese seminarians. He exceeded the goal and then some so it was a great success! In addition to learning how to dive in his free time, he has been concentrating on a little side business with miniature, custom-made farm toys. Rockin'' H Farm Toys is creeping up into the success category and we are proud of him.
Chris had another summer full of Miss Kitty down at Boot Hill. It was a trying summer due to tempers, entitlement issues, and lack of time due to only 2 actors portraying the character. She will give this coming summer another try, with the promise that more actresses will be present so more time devoted to family will be the saving grace. She also received a promotion at the college in March becoming the Financial Aid Specialist. It''s a job that she loves, even thought it''s hectic at times, and it''s been wonderful visiting and meeting new students each day.
The house is coming along in the improvements...we are now to the point where we will probably be ready to tackle the kitchen and the main bathroom. New paint is on the walls and new trim is up. Slowly but surely, it is beginning to have some very nice updates. Of course, true to form, we have begun looking at other homes in the area as we are truly outgrowing our house as the kids get older. Ha!
Happy New Year and many blessings!
